Elk City, Oklahoma

I have several memories of Elk City.  Must be because I was getting older! This was my second school for third grade.  There were eventually three, as we returned to G'burg after this.

The memory that  bothered me for a long time has to do with getting to school.  Ginger was going to school then.  She loved her teacher who was left handed, as was Ginger.  However, there was no way to get my little sister to hurry when it came to getting ready for school.  I hate to be late anywhere, and apparently that began early. One morning, I was ready to go and Ginger was not.  I said I would go ahead and watch for her. (We walked to school.) Well, I walked slowly and kept looking back and then I was at school. What to do.  The bell rang and I went to class.  Finally I told my teacher what had happened and she went with me to Ginger's class.  Ginger was there.  Mom had brought her. I don't know if there were repercussions, or if Ginger got ready any faster.  This is a "stand-alone" memory!

This is also where I met one of only half-dozen people named "Gaynell" that I have known in my life.I think her name was Gaynell Brown.

One day, Mom was not well and I was to fix lunch.  I wanted to go across the street to the grocery to get chicken noodle soup.  Easy, fast, and I loved it.  However, she insisted that we have roast as she had it in the ice box.  I stood on a chair next to the stove, browning the meat, preparing things for the pressure cooker. I was only eight years old!  I guess being the eldest had it "perks!" (NOT!)

If Roy seems absent in these writings. it is because he was not in school yet, and most of my memories have to do with that. Sorry, Roy.  You do show up later!

  1. I remember the first time Ms A had chicken noodle soup was at your house. You gave her a bite and she said "yum! egg drop soup!" I guess Chinese carry out was even easier, for me, than chicken noodle soup!
